A world's fair, world fair, universal exposition, or world expo (expo short for exposition) is a large public exhibition. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in varying parts of the world.  The main attractions at world's fairs are the national pavilions, created by participating countries.  World expositions are typically platforms where the state-of-the-art in science and technology from around the world is brought together.  Two recognizable remains from previous world fairs include the Seattle Space Needle from 1962 and Balboa Park in San Diego (my home town) from 1915, and the Eiffel Tower from 1889.

Presently, there are two types of world expositions: registered and recognized (sometimes unofficially known as "major" and "minor" fairs, respectively.  “Major” expos are held in the years that end in 0 and 5, while “minor” expos occur in other years.

While the 2012 Yeosu Expo is considered a “minor”, do not let that description fool you.  The organisers anticipate participation of more than 100 countries and international organizations, and 8 million visitors.  The facility site area is 2,710,000 square meters.  The Energy Park is designed to bring the vision of “Low Carbon, Green Growth” to life, and is comprised of the Renewable Energy Power Plant, and the Energy Park Experience Zone, along with a site for rest and relaxation.

If you are living in South Korea or Japan, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a world fair.  The next one will take place in Milan, Italy in 2015.

Stay tuned for more info and pictures.  My family and I plan on being at the Expo 2012 in June.
